HORSE POWERED READING IS…
Horse Powered Reading is a form of experiential learning that focuses on the learning process for the pupil. The benefit is that the student is allowed to make discoveries and experiment with knowledge firsthand.
Horse Powered Reading integrates social-emotional learning with academics. Students see and experience reading with their entire mind, body and emotions by immersive activities that improve and build upon the skills involved in reading.
Horse Powered Reading can break through challenges, giving the student new and renewed opportunities to learn or reinforce reading and other academic skills.
During a Horse Powered Reading session, issues affecting learning are made visible by identifying obstacles (through the use of toys and props) that may get in the way of understanding. This allows students a chance to reflect on what they are experiencing and provides an opportunity to create new patterns of learning in a supported environment.
All sessions are tailored to individual needs. The content of each session varies depending on the skill level being addressed.
In the session pictured, a first time reader was asked to navigate the arena by searching for and finding words that matched their ‘reading map’ with their chosen reading buddy (Tony the Pony). They were encouraged to sound out the found words and to read the story to their reading buddy.
*IS HORSE POWERED READING EFFECTIVE?*
The answer is a resounding YES! Assessments, parent-teacher observation and improved self-efficacy/confidence have proven the effects of this learning modality. It creates long lasting and exponential growth in learning.
