Tutoring with an Equine
Partner
Equine-assisted learning (EAL) is a growing technique that provides unforgettable life lessons for all ages. What makes this process so different is the partnering with horses in on-the-ground activities (unmounted). The horse becomes a willing participant, a co-facilitator.
Horses are naturally inquisitive. They are herd animals and provide concrete lessons on communication, group dynamics, and caring for each member within the herd. They present a living, breathing example of how to work well with others, both human and equine.
I have chosen a mini horse named Tony the Pony as my tutoring partner. He is small, about the size of a large dog, but he has all the attributes of a full-size horse. Tony is a mature horse who has demonstrated a natural calmness around children. He is naturally inquisitive, but because of his size, he is not intimidating to children.
In addition to choosing the perfect equine partner, I recently completed and am certified as a Horse-Powered Reading instructor. Horse-Powered Reading is a world-renowned program created by Dr. Michele Pickel, a professor at Concordia University. Dr. Pickel teaches teachers how to teach. Her program offers research-based measurable outcomes showing the incredible impact equines have on a child’s ability to learn and retain new information.
I have an Early Childhood and Family Studies degree from Oneonta State College in Upstate New York. I have been a Sylvan Learning Center Tutor for the last five years and have also worked as a Library Children’s Program Coordinator for the Riverside County Library System for the past three years.
I believe horses show up in a very real and in-the-moment way. They notice us and their environment. They are present. They are responsive. They provide instant feedback and are what make Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) a unique learning experience.
Lastly, I have longed to share what I know and what I love. The wonder of connecting with horses in a safe and natural setting that opens the doors to life long learning.
